Project Introduction
The project is located in Qingdao, a top-floor duplex residence with a total construction area of 240㎡. Inspired by the homeowner’s years of living experience and aesthetic preferences shaped by Southeast Asian cultures, this design embodies the core spirit of Southeast Asian style. Drawing inspiration from the natural ecosystem of tropical rainforests, it incorporates abundant natural materials and vibrant greenery, transforming the home into a living, breathing organic sanctuary. Here, residents can immerse themselves in a serene, laid-back atmosphere far from the hustle and bustle of city life.Functionally, the layout caters to the diverse needs of modern living. Open and airy public spaces foster interaction and connection, while also accommodating daily routines, leisure activities, and evolving storage needs. The duplex structure creates rich spatial layers with clear separation between active and quiet zones. It retains the signature leisure and elegance of Southeast Asian style while aligning with modern practicality, allowing natural beauty and everyday warmth to coexist harmoniously. To come home is to return to nature; to dwell is to live in poetry. Rooted in the essence of living, this design weaves natural textures into daily life, crafting a peaceful retreat high above the city where the mind and body can find true calm and renewal.

Taking nature as the underlying tone, the design minimizes intricate decorations and emphasizes the true essence of materials alongside the flowing interplay of light and shadow. Natural textures such as solid wood, rattan, and cotton-linen run through the entire space. Their warm and rustic qualities dissolve spatial boundaries, creating a transparent, expansive, and breathy ambiance. Ample natural lighting complements the scattered greenery; the rustling leaves and lush greenery infuse the interior with the vitality of rainforests, endowing the space with both natural wildness and humanistic warmth.
The living and dining areas adopt an open layout, breaking spatial boundaries and allowing natural light to flow freely throughout the airy space.
The living room is dominated by natural wood tones and dark brown, presenting distinct layers and harmonious artistic conception. The natural wood tone echoes the textures of rainforest soil and tree trunks, laying a naturally rustic foundation; dark brown lends the space a sense of calm and solidity, much like vintage Southeast Asian furniture, embodying the warmth and strength nurtured by time. The walls are finished in off-white latex paint paired with retro plaster lines. The soft brightness elevates the overall ambiance, while the delicate contours lend a refined rhythm of classic European elegance. This creates a pleasing contrast with the raw, natural charm of Southeast Asian style, striking a balanced dialogue between simplicity and sophistication, rustic nature and graceful elegance.
In the corridor and transition areas, a single monstera plant sets the entire tropical mood.Sunlight filtered through venetian blinds falls gently on the wooden flooring, casting soft, shifting shadows that recreate the relaxed light and shadow of a Southeast Asian rainforest. An open storage nook is designed under the staircase to provide flexible space for growth and daily storage. The dedicated piano area further infuses the home with artistic warmth and the gentle rhythm of growth.
The integrated living and dining layout allows parents to easily keep an eye on their children’s activities while resting, so a sense of companionship is present everywhere.
Vintage wall art, carved plaster moldings, and rattan furniture together craft the refined aesthetic of retro Nanyang style, while lush greenery infuses the space with natural vitality, echoing the “rainforest imagery” central to Southeast Asian design.

The master bedroom continues the project’s natural and relaxed tone. Featuring deep vintage green as the main hue, it recreates the serene ambience of a tropical rainforest, forming an exclusive private retreat for the residents.
The master bathroom centers on tropical plant-patterned tiles and vintage green tiles, continuing the overall natural tropical style of the home to create an exquisite bathroom space that is both functional and atmospheric.

The walls are mainly paved with dark green rectangular tiles and off-white patterned tiles. The dark green rectangular tiles bring the depth and vitality of a tropical rainforest; their matte finish and vertical lines enhance the vertical sense of space while echoing the use of natural materials in Southeast Asian design. The off-white wall tiles feature hand-painted bird-and-floral botanical patterns that outline the liveliness of natural ecology through delicate lines, achieving a visual balance of “light on top and heavy below,” which not only relieves the potential heaviness of dark green but also enriches the artistic narrative of the space.
